A few weeks ago there was a fair amount of press around Congress deeming pizza a vegetable for school lunch program purposes. There was some pushback from the public upon hearing this. Yet despite an incredulous public, pizza is officially a vegetable thanks to Congress and the lobbying efforts of some large companies.
This designation amounts to a subsidy for pizza producers who supply school systems. Additionally efforts were made to limit the amount of starches (French fries) that schools getting federal money could feed their pupils. Yet Congress in it’s wisdom overrode this effort and now fries will remain prominently on the government subsidized menu. The producers of French fires in Idaho and Maine are quite pleased, their mainline into the taxpayers pocket has been maintained.
The broccoli lobby just doesn’t have the same power as the frozen pizza industry, or the National Potato Council.
