“Society will pay a huge price in cancer because of this,” John Sedat, professor of biochemistry and biophysics at the University of California at San Francisco.
Thanks to funding from the Stimulus Bill the Department of Homeland Security has been buying and installing giant x-ray machines at border crossings that can see through cars. The radiation such machines expose the occupant of the car to is roughly that of the x-ray machines at the airport.
Those machines have been banned in Europe over cancer concerns.
Even still one, with much humiliation, can opt out of the x-ray boxes at the airport. I wonder if the same option will be given to those crossing the border.
For all those who think these machines are a good idea because either you don’t cross the border regularly or you think this will save us from a terrorist attack, remember DHS is setting up camp on highways and byways all across the United States now. It’s not just airports or borders anymore, say hello to the TSA on your everyday commute. How long do you think it will be before we have these machines at subway stops and toll booths? If we keep rolling over and accepting these intrusions into our privacy it won’t be very long at all.
