Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement Undermines US Sovereignty

The new agreement brokered by the Obama administration has been negotiated in secret. Even those in Congress have been unable to get a good look at it. However, a new leaked document shines some light.

What it shows is the continuation of the slow but steady loss of American sovereignty. If a corporation doesn’t like a law under the agreement it can take it up with a higher court, a non-American court.

Says the Huffington Post:

“Under the agreement currently being advocated by the Obama administration, American corporations would continue to be subject to domestic laws and regulations on the environment, banking and other issues. But foreign corporations operating within the U.S. would be permitted to appeal key American legal or regulatory rulings to an international tribunal. That international tribunal would be granted the power to overrule American law and impose trade sanctions on the United States for failing to abide by its rulings.”

We think there are many ridiculous laws which restrict good business. There are many which are downright terrible. But an “international tribunal” should never be able to overrule US law in the US.

Talk about a slippery slope.
