There is a ton of money in the drug war and marijuana is target numero uno even today.
It is bulky, easy to detect, and prevalent. It is by far the preferred illicit drug of Americans. As such it is the best business opportunity for the industries which have grown up around prohibition. This includes police forces which are larger than they should be, testing companies, the courts and lawyers, etc. The beer companies and pharmaceutical companies are also against legalization for obvious reasons.
And don’t forget the producers. As long as pot is illegal the dealers keep making money too.
Is pot illegal solely because it is a money making proposition for some? No, there are still many who believe that the use of drugs is morally wrong. They believe that society should not “condone” the use of cannabis. That this sends the wrong message to our youth and encourages general depravity. Some still fear that pot will turn everyone into communists. Which given California’s liberal pot laws may actually make sense. Maybe Nixon was right!
But probably not.
It’s time to seriously consider an end to cannabis prohibition. It looks like America is ready for that conversation.
(From Pew Research)
For the first time in more than four decades of polling on the issue, a majority of Americans favor legalizing the use of marijuana. A national survey finds that 52% say that the use of marijuana should be made legal while 45% say it should not.
