How Aaron Swartz and Congressman Daryl Issa saved the Internet from Hollywood


If you care about freedom, if you care about liberty, you owe both of these men a debt of gratitude. I know I owe them.

The powers that be would love to turn the Internet into a highly regulated corporate information garden, instead of the beautiful, robust, dynamic information rain forest it is now. Hollywood would love to clear cut the Internet.

Thank God Daryl Issa, Swartz, others on Capitol Hill, and the Free Internet Army stopped them. But the movie guys are coming back. Hollywood loves a sequel and the empire will strike back.

We just have to beat them back every time them come for our freedom.

Two years ago, Hollywood, no kidding, masterminded a plot to, in effect, steal the Internet (by criminalizing certain conduct, booby trapping the Web in ways that few non-mega-corporations can cope with).  There are signs, as perceptively flagged by the Electronic Frontier Foundation, that the perps are back at it.
