I would actually argue that this is an antiquated way of looking at things. I would be more interested to know which cities leaned more toward statism and which generally leaned away.
DC for instance I would characterize as intensely statist for obvious reasons, whereas San Francisco is liberal but not terribly statist.
Virginia Beach is characterized on this map as generally “conservative.” But it’s not small government conservative. It’s big government “conservative.” Same for Jacksonville. Is that really “conservative” anymore? What the hell is “conservative” anyway? What is “liberal.”
Truth is, nobody knows. We are in the midst of a political realignment and old political definitions make less and less sense.
That, my friends is a very good thing.
