WhatsApp and iMessage could be banned under new surveillance plans (We must give up more of our liberty because of terrorists)

Another terrorist attack and another liberty grab by politicians. It’s like clockwork. Some tragedy happens and some busybody uses it as an opportunity to take yet more freedom from everyday people.

Never let a good crisis go to waste as Rahm Emanuel famously said. Never miss the opportunity to take more humanity from the citizenry in the name of “safety.” Never miss the opportunity to take just a bit more dignity from the average person. Never miss that.

At what point, and I am not kidding about this, will it be illegal to walk around without a cell phone, or some sort of tag identifying where one is? A license to walk. Sounds crazy but think about all that we have lost over the past decade and it really doesn’t seem that far out.

It should. But it doesn’t.

David Cameron could block WhatsApp and Snapchat if he wins the next election, as part of his plans for new surveillance powers announced in the wake of the shootings in Paris.

The Prime Minister said today that he would stop the use of methods of communication that cannot be read by the security services even if they have a warrant. But that could include popular chat and social apps that encrypt their data, such as WhatsApp.

Apple’s iMessage and FaceTime also encrypt their data, and could fall under the ban along with other encrypted chat apps like Telegram.
