This is a pretty shocking statistic but the analysis in the attached article looks sound.
We have made the point multiple times that the greatest destroyers of the environment have historically been governments. But governments have also been the greatest destroyers of people too.
We are not arguing for NO government, but we are arguing that before jumping on the big government bandwagon one should consider the historical track record of big government. Rarely do mass government driven tradgedies start out looking evil. Hitler was elected. Mao was celebrated as a “liberator.” But when power is taken from the individual and placed instead in the collective (in one form or another) death often follows.

If you take the 262 million number and divide into today’s population you get about 1 in 26. That’s one in 26 or about 4% people on earth killed by their own (for lack of better terminology) government. Then consider that the population of the world was only about 2 billion people in the start of the 20th century. That’s about 1 in 7 or over 13% To calculate the odds of being killed by your rulers, you would need to get figures for population and democide fore each year. Without that we can just look at those two number and say that the number should be between 4% and 13%. I say should because you have to consider all of the people who ever lived in the 20th century to get your lower number and I’m not sure what that number is but it’s been 15 years since the century ended and 7 billion is larger than the population at the end of the century. If you average the two extremes, you get 8.5%. So it’s highly likely the odds of you being killed by your own government lies between five and ten percent. If you add in the 100+- million external state war deaths you are looking at a number that is closer to 11%. Let that sink in for a moment.
Your odds of being killed by a state are likely a little worse than 1 in 10.
