This is would be another example of why Trump has to be seen by libertarians and other small government people as a mixed bag. He is pretty bad on some things but when was the last time a president seriously talked about cutting spending by 10% and getting rid of 20% (!) of the long protected federal bureaucratic class? (At least in some agencies.)
Hey, keep this stuff coming. If Trump wants to really get to the heart of the beast, carving deep into the institutionalized cronyism that exists in federal agencies would be an excellent start. 20% is a good round number. We can begin there. And don’t forget the civilian workforce at the Pentagon across the river.
(From The Washington Examiner)
The plan is winning cheers in conservative, anti-tax and anti-spending corners in Washington that have long sought massive cuts in the bureaucracy.
Presidents rarely cut spending, choosing freezes instead. In the meantime, federal spending has reached historic levels. Trump has picked a budget hawk, Rep. Mick Mulvaney, to head the Office of Management and Budget, a clear sign that spending cuts are a top priority.
Still, Trump is likely to face a wall of opposition from Democrats and federal unions who consider much of the federal workforce on their side.
