John McCain: Rand Paul ‘Is Now Working for Vladimir Putin’

McCain is out of line. Way out of line.

The point, Senator, is that we shouldn’t be expanding NATO. The Cold War, is in fact over. And that you would send our troops in theory to protect Montenegro (From what? A Russian backed Serbia we presume?), is insane.

There is absolutely no strategic advantage to bringing Montenegro into NATO. (For us.) What are we afraid of? That the Adriatic Sea is going to fall to the Russian Bear?  We rule the Adriatic and have bases dotted all around the region. We also have the ability to project massive power via aircraft carriers whenever we choose.

No, this is an attempt by a neoconservative to advance the Russian boogeyman theory for political reasons. This is a fading star in the Senate, taking a swipe at a rising star and at a president who does not subscribe to the internationalism at any cost theory of the last 50 years. Senator McCain should be ashamed of himself. Not that he will be.

The long-simmering war between Sens. John McCain and Rand Paul boiled over on Wednesday when the Arizona lawmaker directly accused his colleague of working for Russian President Vladimir Putin.

While speaking from the Senate floor in support of a bill advancing Montenegro’s bid to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), McCain noted objection from his Kentucky colleague, saying that if you oppose the measure, “You are achieving the objectives of Vladimir Putin… trying to dismember this small country which has already been the subject an attempted coup.”

McCain continued: “If they object, they are now carrying out the desires and ambitions of Vladimir Putin and I do not say that lightly.”
