A Musical Moment In Time: John Lee Hooker – The Motor City Is Burning (1967)

This week I talked to a guy in Washington DC about the riots that tore through Washington after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.  He told me of watching the fires spread through the city as a little boy. Right up to the Capitol. He recalled the chaos and then he swept his hand at the smart looking office buildings that surrounded us. “But we’ve come a long way since that time.” And he didn’t mean just that the neighborhood was now pretty, relatively clean, and relatively peaceful. He meant in a broader sense too. In a societal sense. We both agreed that sometimes we as a country forget (at our peril) the many blessings that have come our way.

The week before the attached song from John Lee Hooker had found its way into my Spotify mix. It came up in my shuffle on the way back from DC. I thought I’d share as it is an excellent history lesson. And a great tune.
