Democratic Congressman Hints at Armed Rebellion Against Trump, Lefty NY Magazine Freaks Out

“It’s really a matter of putting public pressure on the president,” Suozzi said in a newly released video of the March 12 talk in Huntington. “This is where the Second Amendment comes in, quite frankly, because you know, what if the president was to ignore the courts? What would you do? What would we do?”

A listener then blurts out, “What’s the Second Amendment?”

Decorum keeps me from posting one of those laughing emojis. Who wants to bet that the person who blurted out “What’s the Second Amendment?” is for gun control?

(From New York Magazine)

In pursuit of the ever-popular Beltway sport of False Equivalence, it’s common to see today’s left-bent resistance to Donald Trump compared to right-wing extremist movements of the recent past, from the tea party movement to precincts further off in the fever swamps. This sort of talk is often the product of laziness or malice. But now and then something happens that makes left-right parallels unavoidable and accurate. One such incident, surprisingly, comes from the loose lips of a member of Congress, New York’s Tom Suozzi. According to the New York Post, the Nassau County Democrat had this to say about the remedies available to deal with Donald J. Trump during a town hall meeting last week:

“It’s really a matter of putting public pressure on the president,” Suozzi said in a newly released video of the March 12 talk in Huntington. “This is where the Second Amendment comes in, quite frankly, because you know, what if the president was to ignore the courts? What would you do? What would we do?”

A listener then blurts out, “What’s the Second Amendment?”

The left-leaning Democrat says, “The Second Amendment is the right to bear arms.

First time I read about this, I thought maybe Suozzi was joking. Apparently not.

From there New York Magazine gets all cognitive dissonance wacky. “OMG, this congressman is using “right wing” talking points. But we do hate Trump so is he like, riiiiight? I dunno, like guns? Really? I mean, like, eeewwww.”

The Congressman is foolish for asserting such a thing. Trump is not a concern on the rule of law front for the most part, and at least not at this point. (Every president is a threat to the rule of law, and Obama was a significant threat, which was largely defused thanks to the Supreme Court which defanged Obama to a large degree in his second term.) But in theory the congressman is correct.

Some people may not like that the 2nd Amendment is the last line of defense for the citizenry confronting a tyrannical government, but that’s why the 2nd Amendment exists. It’s not for hunting. It’s not for shooting skeet, or defending your condo from burglars primarily. The right to bear arms exists to help protect the citizenry from an overreaching government.

That’s the reason why so many anti-gun rights people dislike the 2nd Amendment so much. It fundamentally restricts the power of government. So when a lefty argues that the people should be able to protect themselves from a tyrannical government such a statement messes with some people’s head.

Thing is, in the 1960s the yippies, as completely nutbar crazy as they were, understood this. It’s just that so much of the left has abandoned the spirit of the American Revolution since the 1960s. Indeed much of the “left” is counter-revolutionary in the American sense. Most of America’s “Left” is about conformity and “safety.”
