So Trump went on Fox and Friends and said that he might prefer a presidential election based solely on an overall popular vote. Not only that, he said he’d be for it because “It’d be easier to win.”
Well, it feels like the obvious must be stated here, what about 2016? Without the Electoral College, which gives a voice to the entire country instead of to just the biggest population centers, you’d be tanning in Mar-A-Lago and Hillary’d be the one droning Syrians Mr. Trump.
This was an off the cuff statement and we’ve come to expect such statements, but Mr. President, please save such musings for off camera. Of course then they might be leaked. So…How about we just let the Electoral College be? That’d probably be for the best.*
“Remember, we won the election. And we won it easily.** You know, a lot of people say ‘Oh, it was close.’ And by the way, they also like to always talk about Electoral College. Well, it’s an election based on the Electoral College. I would rather have a popular election, but it’s a totally different campaign,” Trump said. “It’s as though you’re running — if you’re a runner, you’re practicing for the 100-yard dash as opposed to the 1-mile.”
“The Electoral College is different. I would rather have the popular vote because it’s, to me, it’s much easier to win the popular vote,” he continued.
*Of course the electoral college isn’t going anywhere.
**You won the election because you won the ELECTORAL COLLEGE easily.
