SNAP Reform Will Send Four Million New People to Work

SNAP is full of fraud. It is also a hugely crony system that benefits large food corporations. Reform is sorely needed and it’s about time we got moving.

(At one point the Obama administration was actively trying to push people onto food stamp roles. Anything to create government dependency I guess.)

Almost four-and-a-half million SNAP recipients would go to work under reforms currently making their way through Congress, data from the Foundation for Government Accountability (FGA) show.

Proposed work requirements would cover about 12 million people according to FGA’s data. With approximately seven-and-a-half million SNAP recipients already working, an additional four-and-a-half million who currently don’t work would find themselves responsible for working, finding work, or taking advantage of federally funded education and training programs.

These work requirements are part of a major overhaul of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program—often referred to as “food stamps”—included in the most recent House agricultural bill.
