National Review: China Contributing $500 Million to Trump-Linked Project in Indonesia

This deal was being negotiated prior to Trump winning the presidency (when was the deal closed?) but one wonders whether Trump pulling out of the deal once he won might have been the best thing to do.

On the other hand it does offer an interesting wrinkle (which may work in the US’s favor) in any negotiations with China. Trump can point to this project and use it as a kind of leverage. That his name will be on this Chinese project is an interesting point of commonality. (Of course this is the problem too.)

It’s not like Trump didn’t know this was happening and it’s not like he didn’t know he was going to get criticism for the project.

It is a clearly crony project. The Chinese government is backing the project and will ensure it’s “success”. And Trump ‘Corp’ will benefit from the largess of The Ultimate Crony Capitalist State. That isn’t good. But this project might not be all bad either. More clarity on the deal is a reasonable thing to ask however.

The Chinese government is extending a $500 million loan to a state-owned construction company to build an Indonesian theme park that will feature a Trump-branded golf course and hotels.

A subsidiary of Chinese state-owned construction firm Metallurgical Corporation of China (MCC) signed a deal last week with the Indonesian firm MNC Land to build an “integrated lifestyle resort,” as part of Beijing’s global influence-expanding “Belt and Road” infrastructure initiative…

…“Even if this deal is completely and entirely above board, it simply furthers the perception of impropriety” surrounding Trump’s business dealings, Christopher Balding, an economics professor at Shenzhen’s HSBC Business School, told AFP. “Especially with the potential trade war, this is not a good look….Critics will be entirely right to demand answers.”
