President Donald Trump has said the US is not pursuing the “Libya model” for the denuclearisation of North Korea.
The suggestion by his National Security Adviser John Bolton angered the North, which threatened to pull out of a summit with Mr Trump next month.
Libya’s Muammar Gaddafi gave up nuclear weapons in 2003 in exchange for the lifting of sanctions, only to be killed by Western-backed rebels years later.
Mr Trump said the US was not seeking to depose North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
He said the summit, due to take place in Singapore on 12 June, was still going to happen.
