For the most part Facebook has been a fairly good partner for us. We think they do many things well. However, further cozying up to the #oldmedia, the all too often crony media, the guys who resent new voices being heard is disheartening. It really is against the spirit of the cyber community, and fundamentally the American spirit.
If Zuckerberg is really concerned with “fake news”, and to some degree he should be, he should be quite concerned with much of the old media. CNN, MSNBC, sometimes the Post and the New York Times, NPR nearly ALL the time these days (that breaks our heart), are part of the old establishment and they want to keep other news organizations, their competitors, in their place. That these media outlets openly partner, all too often, with the Democratic Party is no coincidence. One must always remember that Media Matters, founded by George Soros, was Obama’s de facto ministry of information. Many #oldmedia outlets still take taking points from Media Matters.
Just because The New York Times and the Post tut tut about how they cover the “truth” (I thought truth was subjective with the PC media. That’s what they always used to say.) doesn’t mean that they cover the “truth.”
This is an industry that is resorting to a form of censorship to protect their positions of power. The #oldmedia want people dumbed down like in the old days. They want to stuff the information genie back into the bottle and kill the Internet driven intellectual Renaissance. The old media do not like NEW IDEAS.
The Russian thing is largely a ruse. We all know it. But the big industry boys (and even more importantly the political class, both the Bush types and the Clinton types) want to use it as an excuse to suppress real information. It’s ugly and it should not be happening in this country.
We at AC2 News call upon Mr. Zuckerberg to appeal to the true spirit of liberalism (real liberalism, you know with liberty) and the American tradition of open discussion and to not capitulate to those who would bring a dark curtain down on speech.
Zuckerberg said the company has gathered data on how consumers perceive news brands by asking them to identify whether they have heard of various publications and if they trust them.
“We put [that data] into the system, and it is acting as a boost or a suppression, and we’re going to dial up the intensity of that over time,” he said. “We feel like we have a responsibility to further [break] down polarization and find common ground.”
Zuckerberg met with a group of news media executives at the Rosewood Sand Hill hotel in Menlo Park after delivering his keynote speech at Facebook’s annual F8 developer conference Tuesday.
The meeting included representatives from BuzzFeed News, the Information, Quartz, the New York Times, CNN, the Wall Street Journal, NBC, Recode, Univision, Barron’s, the Daily Beast, the Economist, HuffPost, Insider, the Atlantic, the New York Post, and others.
No National Review. No Democracy Now! No Daily Caller. No Drudge Report. No Intercept. No Washington Examiner. No AC2 News. Just the big guys, and in a few cases key nodes of actual FAKE NEWS.
