Category 2 Hurricane Bud is expected to strengthen off Mexico’s west coast and could likely become a major hurricane by late Monday, forecasters said.

In an update Monday morning, the National Hurricane Center said Bud’s core and strong winds are expected to remain offshore over the next few days.

The center of the storm was located about 220 miles south-southwest of Manzanillo and about 285 miles south of Cabo Corrientes, and has 105 mph maximum sustained winds, the NHC said. It’s moving northwest at 10 mph.

Storms with Category 3 strength or greater are classified as major hurricanes.

The NHC issued a tropical storm watch for Manzanillo to Cabo Corrientes, meaning tropical storm conditions are possible there over the next day.
