The drug war and the drug warriors cling on where they can.
There are few things more crony than the war on pot. Lots of vested interests want very much to keep the substance as illegal as they can. These interests include PHARMA, arguably the police, certainly the federal drug agencies. Consider also that we have giant pharmaceutical companies selling what amounts to legal heroin, but Wells Fargo is afraid that it will get in trouble with the powers that be because one of its clients gets donations from a few cannabis legalization groups? We’re pretty sure Purdue doesn’t get the scrutiny of The Mom and Pop Pot Advocacy Association. We wonder why that is?
“This is yet another clear signal to Congress that they need to address the banking issue for the cannabis industry,” Mason Tvert, a spokesman for the Marijuana Policy Project (MPP), said in a statement. “It is absurd enough that state-regulated businesses are being denied standard banking services, but it is absolutely ludicrous that political candidates and nonprofit advocacy organizations are also being affected.
