Conducting shadow diplomacy behind the back of the US president seems wrong. Republican/Democrat/other, what Kerry (and presumably allies) did with Iran after Obama left office should concern all of us.
One important note; The Logan Act was passed by John Adams admin as part of the reprehensible Aliens and Sedition Act, which really threatened liberty in the US, and no one since then has ever been prosecuted for a violation of it. What Kerry has been doing is very wrong, but we wouldn’t want anyone to be prosecuted for Logan Act violation. It could be used against anyone who dared disagree with the government and should have been repealed long ago.
(From The Washington Examiner)
Perhaps Kerry believes he is not violating the Logan Act of 1799 which states that: “Any citizen of the United States, wherever he may be, who, without authority of the United States, directly or indirectly commences or carries on any correspondence or intercourse with any foreign government or any officer or agent thereof, in relation to any disputes or controversies with the United States, or to defeat the measures of the United States, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than three years, or both.”…
…To allow him (Kerry) to do so sets a horrible precedent for any future administration, for American democracy, and for coherence of U.S. policy.
