Socialism fails at so many things, but it is fantastic at creating corruption and lines. Venezuela is the world’s most recent example of this phenomenon.
Of course the cronies always seem to get to the front of the line.
“It’s just another offense, another humiliation—people are sleeping in the street with their children,” she said, clutching a pillow and pointing to bodies wrapped in blankets or curled up on pieces of cardboard… “I never thought it would come to this.”
We were recently talking to a person who used to make their living in Venezuela years ago. The point was made that if Venezuela wasn’t as verdant as it is (generally) the current crisis would probably be on par with what has been seen in parts of Africa and Asia. Things grow in the ground in Venezuela, and that is the difference between life and death for many Venezuelans.
