As we’ve said many times, we are not gun guys but we are very happy that the 2nd Amendment exists. There is a reason the right to bear arms is right after the right to free speech. Both the 1st and 2nd Amendments are key protections for the citizenry.
It is natural that some in government don’t like either free speech or gun ownership. Government always seeks to restrict the power of the citizenry and to expand power for itself. This is the disposition of government. It is what government does. That’s one of the reasons it often is said that the “price of liberty is eternal vigilance.”
We’d better all pay attention. Citizens have gun rights. Slaves do not.
As NBC News reports, this is a major departure from prior gun control proposals that typically exempt existing firearms; as in the past, Democrats and gun safety groups have carefully resisted proposals that could be interpreted as ‘gun confiscation’, a concept gun rights groups have often invoked as part of a slippery slope argument against more modest proposals like universal background checks.
And sure enough Swalwell’s egotistical over-reach – going full “Australia” – prompted anger across social media.
