California may have the world’s fifth largest GDP, but it also ranks fourth among U.S. states in terms of income inequality and first among U.S. states in poverty, according to the Census expanded definition that takes into account housing costs. Racial inequality is rampant: the ratio of Latino to white household income has barely budged since the 1990s, while the ratio of Black to white household income has actually declined.
