Opinion from TheSorrentino.com: Google’s Earth – how the tech giant is helping the state spy on us

Every once in a while we’ll get a glimmer of anti-authoritarianism from a prominent lefty publication. We wish we saw more of this sort of thing.

One of the key takeaways from this very interesting article is the deeply crony nature of Google.

We aren’t saying that Google is all bad. It is not. It has done much good. We use Google products every day. Youtube (owned by Google) is arguably one of the greatest storehouse of information there has ever been. Before Youtube if my garbage disposal went out I was calling the handyman. Now with help from a DIY video I fix it (within reason) myself. Additionally, Youtube is the place where I have been able to listen to the lectures of some of the world’s greatest thinkers first hand. Rothbard, Hayek, Ron Paul, Ralph Raico, many others have long filled my Youtube queue. So Google is NOT all bad.

But given the current political bias, issues floating around the Internet giant, it is of particular concern that Google has deep ties to the CIA and friends going way back.

Google is a massive government contractor. It makes lots of money off of contacts paid for by the taxpayers of this country. If the company, which has partnered with the government, is actively seeking to manipulate the direction of political thought for the interests of clients and against the interests of the American people at large, that’s a problem.

(From The Guardian)

In 2010, as a sign of just how deeply Google had integrated with US intelligence agencies, it won an exclusive, no-bid $27m contract to provide the NGA with “geospatial visualisation services”, effectively making the company the “eyes” of America’s defence and intelligence apparatus. Competitors criticised the NGA for not opening the contract to the customary bidding process, but the agency defended its decision, saying it had no choice: it had spent years working with Google on secret and top-secret programmes to build Google Earth technology according to its needs, and could not go with any other company.

And lastly consider that Google is currently partnering with the Chinese Communist Party to create a censored Internet. So Google works with the US government and the Chinese Communists intimately. That is odd.
