Weed, ganja, herb, reefer, buds, cannabis, sweet leaf, kaya, pot. It’s getting more legit every single day. In Donald Trump’s America legal weed is quickly becoming reality and this is a very good thing. In a supposedly free society herb should never have been criminalized in the first place. (Thanks again FDR.)
The corporatization of Mary Jane however needs to be watched carefully. Phillip Morris, maker of Marlboro cancer sticks, has just made a $1.8 BILLION weed bet. Train an eye on these guy.
Legal marijuana is here to stay but the artisan nature of the industry should be preserved (by customers not the government) to some extent. In the years ahead we hope that pot will be more “craft brew” than Bud Light.
Watch to make sure lobbyists don’t start pushing “no grow” bills in state houses. There will probably be an effort to limit cannabis gardening as such an activity will actively compete with commoditized weed. We don’t need crony weed.
Even if industry did get such laws passed it is unlikely to stop many growers. But this is an area of policy that is worth our attention, particularly now as the industry comes into the light.
Marlboro maker Altria Group Inc. is taking a 45 percent stake in Cronos Group, the Canadian medical and recreational marijuana provider said Friday.
The agreement includes a warrant to acquire additional shares over the next four years that could give the Altria, which is based in Richmond, Virginia, a 55 percent ownership stake in the Toronto company.
