Defense Secretary James Mattis will retire at the end of February, writing Friday in a resignation letter that President Donald Trump deserves a secretary “whose views are better aligned with yours.” . . .

In his resignation letter released by the Pentagon, Mattis cited a lack of agreement on how the United States should be involved in international issues as the reason for his departure.
